Montezuma was the Aztec Emperor, who lived between 1466 and 1520, reigning from 1502 to 1520.  He was said to have been a despot and his rule caused unrest among his people.  The arrival of Hernan Cortes in Mexico heralded the demise of Montezuma who viewed the Spanish as descendants of the god Quetzalcoatl.  He tried to bribe them into leaving and when this failed, he invited them to his court.  There, he was taken hostage, later killed during the rise of the Aztec against the Spanish.  He was then replaced by his children who were known by the same names.
