Share the Love on National Love Your Pet Day (20 February)

We’re getting a jump start here at Kitty Bingo on National Love Your Pet Day. This special day is celebrated in the UK on 20 February, so if you’re an animal-lover, this is the day to double-up on the love!

As humans, our love, compassion and appreciation can easily extend to other species that are able to share our physical and emotional worlds. These special bonds enrich our lives, supply us with companionship and can even relieve stress and anxiety. With all this love in mind, we’ve put together some of the best National Love Your Pet Day ideas to make the most of the day, including the best slots and bingo games to play on our site. Let’s get started!

Set up a photoshoot

What better way to celebrate National Love Your Pet Day than to set up a photoshoot for you and your pet? Whether your companion is a kitty, pooch or pony, you’ll have some beautiful pictures as keepsakes, and they make the best wall art.

If your pet is a social butterfly, you could arrange to take them to the studio of a pet portrait photographer, or the photoshoot could come to you. Your companion may feel more at ease if the session takes place on their favourite chair or in a pretty spot in the garden.

Arrange a pet picnic

If you have a well-socialised canine, pack a picnic basket with their favourite treats and yours. Take along plenty of fresh water and head for a dog park. You could also arrange to meet a group of friends and their pets for a National Love Your Pet Day party! Here’s one of our favourite dog treat recipes to try:

Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treat Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Pumpkin purée, for flavour and to aid digestion
  • Peanut butter, packed with protein and healthy fats (make sure the brand you’re using is free of xylitol which is toxic for dogs)
  • Eggs, to bind
  • Wholewheat flour, preferably gluten-free
  • Cinnamon, for extra flavour

Method:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F/gas mark 4 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Combine the wet ingredients in a bowl, or in an electronic mixer at medium-high speed.
  • Add the flour and cinnamon and mix until a stiff dough has formed.
  • Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface until it’s a ¼ inch thick and cut using biscuit cutters.
  • Bake for 20 minutes, or until the edges start to turn golden brown.
  • Allow to cool completely.
  • If you can’t take your pet for a picnic, put aside time to do whatever’s the most fun or relaxing for him or her. Even if it’s extra cuddle time before heading off to work or a bit of a sleep-in.

Go toy shopping

Gather your pet’s toys and see which are looking a little careworn. Put these aside to donate to your local animal shelter. Now for the fun part! By now you’ll be aware of your pets toy preferences. Some kitties love to chase a ball while there are plenty of pups who can’t get enough of cat wands. Head out to the shops and pick out some brand-new toys to spoil them.

One way to make sure your pet never gets bored with their toys is to keep them in a box and bring out a different toy or two each day. By simply rotating the toys, you’ll keep their interest and avoid toys becoming “part of the furniture”.

It’s also a good idea when introducing a new type of toy to first speak to your vet or the shop owner to make sure the toy is appropriate for your pet. Large dogs will, for example, chew most toys into oblivion unless it's robust and can withstand rough play.

Volunteer at an animal shelter

Most neighbourhoods have an animal shelter overflowing with rescues. While most shelters are a safe haven for cats and dogs, many also rescue rabbits, birds, and even goats and pigs. One of the best ways you can observe National Love Your Pet Day is by putting aside plenty of time to spoil your furkids, then heading for your local shelter to lend a helping hand.

Volunteers are always in high demand to groom and play with the cats, walk the dogs or bathe a pig. It’s not only incredibly rewarding work, but you’ll get back from the furry residents all the love you put in, in spades!

Adopt

One of the greatest acts of love we can ever carry out is to adopt a shelter animal. If ever there was the purrfect example of a win-win situation, this is it! You’ll be giving a rescue who has been through the wringer a second chance at life and, in return, they’ll reward you with companionship and a particularly special kind of gratitude and love.
