It's no secret that we’re crazy about cats here at Kitty Bingo, and our guess is that you are too. And when we’re not playing a game of online bingo, we’re almost definitely playing with our cats instead (and sometimes at the same time)! So it’s hard to believe that anyone wouldn't be crazy about cats — even some of the most famous celebrities have been known to be (you guessed it), crazy about cats!
From books and poems written about cats to the kitties featured in some of our favourite music videos and albums, there’s a whole lot of celebrity love out there for these furry felines, not least from a certain rock star who used to have phone calls with his menagerie of cats when he was away on tour. “Who?” you might wonder? Well… let’s find out!
Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift is a gushing cat lover, and owns three little furballs: Meredith Grey (named after the lead character in TV show Grey’s Anatomy); Olivia Benson (in homage to a character in another one of her favourite shows, Law & Order: SVU); and Benjamin Button (after the eponymous movie character).
All three of Swift’s kitties appeared in her 2019 music video, ME! — in fact, Swift actually met Benjamin Button on set. It was love at first sight, and she decided to adopt him. Swift said of the handler: “She handed me this tiny cat and he just starts purring and he looks at me like, ‘You’re my mom, and we’re going to live together.’ I fell in love.” You can find pictures of Swift’s cats all over her social media channels, and you may even catch a glimpse of them at some events she has attended, with Meredith and Olivia having already shown their paws at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards!
British actor and comedian Russell Brand has a deep love for cats, specifically his own, who Brand loved for 16 years before he made his way to kitty heaven. Named after the British pop star Morrissey, Brand told US talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres: “I sometimes talk to actual Morrissey about cat Morrissey and sort of blush at the oddness of it all.” Morrissey (the cat) even had his own Twitter handle – @RussellBrandCat – now that’s crazy, uh, we mean love!
Spanish actress Penélope Cruz is a self-professed cat lady. When she first moved to Los Angeles, she found herself lonely and isolated in a small hotel room, as she told Vogue in an interview: “I would find cats in the street and take them with me. I raised a lot of cats in that period.”
Nowadays Cruz only has one cat, Capucina; but, as she playfully told Marie Claire, “We keep the [kitchen] window open, and then others come to hang out with her, so we’re always throwing cats out of the kitchen.”
Rock ’n’ roll icon Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of legendary band Queen, had three great loves in his life – performing, Mary Austin, and his cats. Mercury adored his kitties and felt them to be his children – he pampered them, served them freshly prepared chicken and fish at mealtimes, gave them stockings filled with toys and treats at Christmas each year, and was known to call home to chat with them when he was away on tour (bless!).
Mercury dedicated his 1985 solo album, Mr. Bad Guy, to his clowder, saying: “This album is dedicated to my cat Jerry – also Tom, Oscar, and Tiffany, and all the cat lovers across the universe – screw everybody else!” However, out of his 10 beloved feline friends, Delilah was his favourite. He even wrote a song about Delilah, his “little princess”, which featured on Queen’s 1991 album, Innuendo.
Chinese-American actress Bai Ling not only loves cats of all kinds, but feels that in her past life she was a cat – a cheetah or leopard, to be specific. Bai Ling’s beloved cat, Quiji (pronounced chee-jee, meaning “magic” in Chinese), is said to be part-cheetah. Bai Ling was given Quiji, worth £21,700, as a gift: she was told that the cat’s father was a cheetah, while its mother was a domestic cat. Whether that’s entirely true, who knows, but what we do know is that Bai Ling has a deep love for animals of all kinds, especially her special cat, Quiji!
German-American poet and writer Charles Bukowski wrote six novels and more than 50 collections of poetry, letters and short stories in his lifetime. Among these are the poem, My Cats, and the book, On Cats. Becoming sentimental about cats in his later years, Bukowski wrote: “The more cats you have, the longer you live. If you have a hundred cats, you’ll live 10 times longer than if you have 10. Someday this will be discovered, and people will have a thousand cats and live forever.” What he said!
You may have heard about Elizabeth Taylor’s many husbands, but fluffy furballs were the real love of this legendary actress’ life. Born in London, Taylor was one of the most beautiful actresses in classical Hollywood cinema in the 1950s. She had a deep love of cats of all kinds (especially Siamese cats), and animals in general, calling them her “sweetest and most cherished friends”.
